"Welcome to Red Letter Day. Your instructions are as follows: kill this person before they kill you."
This Canadian mini-Purge on a micro-budget shines brightest in basic dialogue construction, camerawork, & practical effects, but unfortunately the premise has WAY more potential than is realized in its actual plot.
Probably leaked outta all them plotholes...Even so, I had to fight off an impulse to rate this slightly higher, simply bc it looked so good for how little [I imagine] it cost to make.
But ultimately the acting put a hard stop on 2/5.I'll never look at a meat tenderizer the same again tho 🙌🏻

Kind've like a lower budget side story in The Purge series. Set in the Aspen Ridge suburb. Only there's no time limit or certain day to kill. Everyone receives red letters in the mail instructing them to kill one particular person before that person kills them.
Its cheesy with characters you never really care about. Most of them you hope die gory deaths in fact. The main familial trio(mother, son, daughter) are barely likable but the mom(Dawn Van de Schoot) was pretty badass. There's some decent bloodletting and a quick 75 min runtime so it never really drags.
Free on Amazon Prime so give it a go!

Kind of like The Purge? Except like, more personalized? I guess. The concept is interesting for sure, and makes Red Letter Daya pretty fun, gory, quick watch. It’s labeled a comedy, and it can be a little comical and I felt that hurt it a bit in my eyes, by just making it a little too cheesy at times. That and the fairly lackluster acting drags it down that most I think. Because I like I said, the concept is cool. And I thought they oddly were pretty accurate on how people would take this kind of thing. Especially these days; you have people joking, making memes, not really minding it whatsoever, then you have the weirded out people; the…

There is this ridiculously long monologue during a moment of pure urgency that isn't quite helpful in creating tension and that scene kinda characterizes the whole movie. It does only bring some slight tension at best, except for the finale, which was pretty great and definitely the highlight of the movie. In the beginning character dynamics are actually quite solidly done, but this palpable chemistry fades once the action gets going. I am not even sure if the comedy was intentional or not but having to guess is never a good sign and I take that as a bad thing. The purge-like story had some fascinating aspects, and it's especially the mysterious organisation and the social media hysteria that are…

Not a bad little horror comedy. It’s small in scope, just a hand full of actors and obviously filmed in the neighbourhood down the road and up the corner. It had shades of that Nic Cage movie Mom & Dad mixed with something like a suburban Battle Royale/ Hunger Games type plot. If it had a bigger budget it could’ve become really great but as it is it’s a fun little flick, I enjoyed the 70 minutes I spent watching it.

Fantasy Film Fest 2019: Film #29
Hooptober 2019: Bonus film #38This is just the boat scene from The Dark Knight stretched out to feature length with half-assed splatter comedy and obnoxious nerd pandering. Fortunately it's barely feature length.
